There are always concerns about new technology. In your view, what are the possible benefits and problems attached to the Internet?

An positive from the uses of the new technology from the internet is the uses of a lot more interaction the world, the uses of social networks such as Facebook and Twitter has really brought all of the world much closer, even celebrities have been more connected to fans from these uses, this really does portray the amount of power the internet brings as it connects everyone around the world to interact with a lot of people.
An negative from the uses of the new technology from the internet is that the use of privacy has really become hard to control, reason being is that the internet seems to be very public but also the use of hackers make it much harder for people to have privacy. Examples such as people's photo's being leaked online without them having no idea or e-mails getting hacked, this really does portray the lack of privacy on the internet.

Another positive from the uses of new technology from the internet is uses of getting a lot more information, this is very effective as search drives such as Google and Yahoo really does give users of the internet a lot of power to research sources they would want to find information on and really does imply the amount of information that the internet brings to the world. Another negative from the uses of new technology from the internet is the uses of having pornographic and paedophilia videos, this is very negative as this could end up in the wrong hands of a child and coming across these videos and would really put a negative affect on them, this surely is not good for children and puts them at huge risk when browsing on the internet.

When linking this to a Media theory I would link this to Andrew Keen's idea of web pages and blogs to the activity of a million monkeys typing nonsense and this really does portray the internet to be very negative as it seems that many of the information is a whole load of rubbish and being explained by a bunch 'monkeys' and really does question the internet and is it very useful or a danger to corrupting people's lives. Another media theory that I would link this to The Pareto theory which is also known as the 80/20 rule, this means that 80% of the media is controlled by 20% of Media institutions, I would link this to the uses of twitter, reason being is that 80% of the actual tweets are created by 20% which could really imply that twitter is not really used but only used to seek information and find out the latest news etc.

In my opinion I think that the internet offers both positive and negative sources, from the uses of interacting with a lot more people is very positive as this means it is much easier to connect with people across the world which im sure satisfies a lot of many people that have family abroad, however the lack of false information on the internet really does put a bad affect on the internet as this really does unsatisfy a lot of people as many information seems to be very false and makes many people not want to use the internet. Overall I would say that the internet is a very powerful source and I believe its a way forward to open our world and connect with a lot more people.

This is linked to new and media from the uses of promoting the amount of failure AVB has gained this season, from the uses of many people tweeting AVB out too the major newspapers naming the favourite managers to replace really did put huge pressure on AVB to make him get sacked from tottenham

Thursday 12 December 2013

1) The Pareto theory which is also known as the 80/20 rule, this means that 80% of the media is controlled by 20% of Media institutions.
2) You can apply Pareto's law theory Italy's population. He notified that 80% of Italy's land was owned by 20% of the population in Italy. He also implied that this theory was linked to a lot of other countries. He also linked this theory to the ten richest men in the world, explaining that the top three richest men ( Carlos Slim Hemu, Warren Barrett and Bill Gates) own much more than the other seven men put together.

Ian Tomlinson

I think that the hegemonic view of the police in a case like this would be very negative, reason being is the way the new and digital media portrayed the story to be outrageous due to headlines such as "Fury at police over 'secret payout' to G20 protester death family" this really does put a bad image on the police as this makes audiences put a negative reputation on them as they can see the police can't be trusted due to their secret payouts and this would lead to a bad reputation and negative stereotypes for the police as the case being put negative in the new and digital media many audiences will be influenced to believe the statements.

I agree that new and digital media challenges the traditional, dominant hegemonic views, reason being is that due to the rise of new and digital media many audiences are really connected to digital media, therefore they would really be influenced to what the new and digital media offers and this really does challenge the traditional and dominant hegemonic views as they are not very effective due to many audiences being influenced from the rise of the new and digital media.

Cover Work

Teenagers will have rowdy, drunken parties. So why not let them?

It may be more newsworthy when big, posh houses fall victim to the dreaded 'Facebook party', but a universal truth applies: if parents are in on the mayhem, there will probably be less of it, argues 16-year-old Mancunian Lizzie Deane
Teenagers at a party.

"A warm welcome awaits you in Ottery St Mary. Nestling in the glorious Otter valley, it is one of the most historic towns in Devon with nostalgia in every stone."
Just precious, isn't it? I've never had the pleasure of visiting this idyllic town, birthplace of celebrated romantic poet Coleridge, where every day – indeed, three times a day – 'Ottregians' gather to sing their Old Ottery song: "O! Ottery dear! O! Ottery fair!" they cry, "My heart goes out to thee. Thou art my home, wher'er I roam, The West! The West for me!"
Last Saturday night though, dear old Ottery was disturbed by a rowdy teenage party. Fear not, however – although this despicable instance of hedonism was so abysmally noisy it was heard by villagers three miles away with "no reprieve whatsoever", at least it was held in a stately home. Another unconventional feature of this particular teen party was that the culprit made a full public apology that has since been published in several national newspapers.
Given these unusual circumstances, perhaps we youths should be let off; it was one party-gone-wrong, right? Except there are a string of these parties that have got just a bit too wild. Those responsible are almost always people my age, 16 – and usually, believe it or not, they are completely innocent of everything other than maybe naivety and occasionally stupidity. Last month a million-pound house in Highgate was trashed after the unfortunate host posted his party on Facebook – presumably not realising it could be seen by anyone. Social media does, of course, play its part in these revellings but, in my experience, old-fashioned word-of-mouth can be just as damaging.
When analysing this text, teenagers are represented very negative in the media, mostly being portrayed as 'party animals' but also tend to do a lot of drugs. This is surely not good for teenagers as the media portrays the stereotypes of teenagers to be very negative and this puts a huge affect on teenagers as this would make the public judge them in a different way. This is a very dominant view and really does put a bad affect on teenagers. When linked to socio-economic classification the teenagers that would be linked to this stereotype would be D1, reason being is that these teenagers wealth would most likely see them be living in an estate which would most likely influence them to do crime and drugs as estate's are portrayed in the media to be negative places that influences crimes and drugs.

Critical Investigation: Next Steps

Most people stereotype Hip-Hop to be negative, promote violence and very explicit. This is surely a bad look to Hip-Hop as many people portray the genre to be negative making it really hard for them to break through and prove that there is a positive side to Hip-Hop. Many rappers such as Chief Keef and Blood Money promote the negativity of Hip-Hop proving the common stereotypes of rap artist's with lyrics like "Bitches ain't shit" and "BANG BANG!", which is really unfair as this is not really how Hip-Hop is. However, Artist's such as J.Cole bring a positive feeling to Hip-Hop and really does challenge the stereotypes of Hip-Hop as he seems to bring wisdom and good emotion to the music and this is a real positive of rap as this is how it started. Lyrics from J.Cole "Let the rain was away all the pain from yesterday" and "It's better to fail trying than wondering what could have happened if you tried". This is really effective and portrays the positivity that Cole brings to Hip-Hop as his lyrics are very motivating and soulful and brings the good side of Hip-Hop and really does challenge the negative stereotype of Hip-Hop.

The rise of Media Technology has had a huge affect on how Hip-Hop is portrayed to be, from the uses of 'Twitter Beef' to explicit and violent videos being put online to many Hip-Hop artists social life or maybe even concerts. For instance, The Game was recently featured to be one of the Hip-Hop artists to be seen online for beating up other Hip-Hop artist 40 Glocc (www.youtube.com/watch?v=bL_xU6QLYxM)
as seen on the video The Game is seen to be rapidly punching the rapper 40 Glocc and this really does
bring the negative stereotype of Hip-Hop as they seem to be promoting violence by recording such violent
events in their life and really does show how the new media technology has had a negative affect on the Hip-Hop culture

Many people believe that Hip-Hop was a better place when Tupac Shakur was around, reason being is that Tupac would rap about culture, politics, love and how we treat woman. This was very effective as Tupac brought the positive side of rap and really made people come together and celebrate his music as if he was speaking words of wisdom. Lyrics such as "Remember one thing, Through every dark night, there's a brighter day"and songs such as Changes really did motivate audiences and make them want to do something with their lives and this really did portray rap to be a positive and motivating music.

The way Hip-Hop videos mostly portray woman is very interesting and controversial, as they most of the time represent woman as an sexual object, this is mostly portrayed through the amount of small clothes they have on and also the close ups of their figure and luxurious lips. Most of the Hip-Hop genre is mostly focussed on the representations of black men. Most of the time there is a huge stereotype to the rap artists mostly portraying them to be black men that are aggressive, violent, sophisticated, rich and very unemotional.

Most of the conventions of Hip-Hop videos:

  • Mostly linked through an iconography of money, mostly being thrown around to portray how much wealth they have to chuck around money, this also shown through luxurious cars to big ridiculous diamond chains and loads of alcohol and drugs.
  • Many rappers are shown to be very cocky and powerful during their videos, this is mostly shown through their body language mostly being positioned to be excited but also powerful from the clothes they wear, mostly wearing the best designer clothes etc.. but also from the camera shots mostly being shot from a low angle so that they look so big and powerful trying to connote to audiences the amount of power they have from being a rapper.
  • Most of the time their are scenes of violence mostly being linked to their lyrics and also violent video narratives mostly making their stereotypes sound right and the violence is shown through the hip-hop mise en scene as they use props such as guns and prostitutes portraying a very bad idea to the media and the audiences.
http://www.theguardian.com/music/2010/aug/04/new-band-j-cole

One guardian article expresses the amount of hope that J.Cole brings to Hip-Hop and which is extremely beneficial as this really does show how much J.Cole has affected Hip-Hop as The Guardian is mostly read by people that are educated with the demographics of B which shows how much power J.Cole has as they recognize him to be the hope of Hip-Hop portraying how Cole puts a positive affect on his audiences as people with higher classes even adore his music.

"The 25-year-old has just signed to Jay-Z's Roc Nation imprint and he's being talked up in the States not just as the heir to Mr BeyoncĂ©'s crown but also as the young rapper who is single-handedly going to bring about a return to Real Hip-Hop"
This is a really positive look for J.Cole and really does challenge the negative stereotypes of Hip-Hop, reason being is that cole is being described in the guardian to be the key figure in hip hop but also bringing back the original game when it was considered to be positive. This is also a good positive for cole and hip hop as the guardian being read by many older audiences that wouldn't really listen to rap would recognize J.Cole as a good figure in hip hop and give hip hop a good reputation to other audiences that don't really listen to rap.

Drake joins J Cole in autism apology

Rappers say outrage over lyric on leaked track Jodeci Freestyle was 'learning lesson'

Drake has joined J Cole in an apology for mocking autism on their new single. Calling it "a learning lesson for both of us", Drake said that the offending lyric will be removed from the official release of Jodeci Freestyle.
Cole, not Drake, was the one who dropped the song's controversial lyric: "I'm artistic," he rapped. "You niggas is autistic, retarded." Representatives for Autism Speaks were among those who spoke out against the line, accusing Cole of perpetuating negative stereotypes against people with autism.
Over the weekend, Cole published a full apology: "Recently there's been a trend that includes rappers saying something offensive, only to be attacked for it in the media and pressured to apologise." he wrote on his blog, alluding to incidents involving Rick Ross and Lil Wayne. "I do not believe that an apology is needed every time someone is offended, especially when that apology is really only for the sake of saving an endorsement or cleaning up bad press. With that said, this is not the case today. This letter is sincere. This apology IS necessary."
"Last week, when I first saw a comment from someone outraged about the lyric, I realised right away that what I said was wrong," Cole continued. "I was instantly embarrassed that I would be ignorant enough say something so hurtful. What makes the crime worse is that I should have known better ... People with this disorder and their loved ones have to go through so much already, the last thing they need is to hear something as ignorant as what I said."
I would say that J.Cole represents himself to be very morally and socially considerate about others as he realized that what he had said was wrong and is extremely sorry which shows he cares about the people in the world. This is extremely beneficial as this puts a good reputation on rap as rappers like cole do not mean to hurt anyone feelings but just want to make music for people to listen to and relate to them.
"Statistics regarding gun homicide, suicide, and aids among young blacks in the 1980's 1990's provide a clear picture of the state of the hip hop generation"
This really does portray rap to be negative as the use of many bad listed situations are related to rap really does make audiences think that rap is very dangerous and this would lead to many people to stop listening to hip hop and downgrade hip hop in all.
"I want to suggest that today nation-conscious rappers draw their inspiration primarily from the black power movements of the 1960's"
http://www.jstor.org/discover/10.2307/466354?uid=2&uid=4&sid=21102950734357

This is really interesting as this portrays hip hop to almost be a strong point for black people improving their role in society as many rappers primarily inspire their lyrics from the days when black people had no power and really does show that hip hop is trying to promote their lyrics so well that black people can have a higher role in society.

"In his discussion of Canadian, Dutch, and French rap Adam Krims (2000) noted the prevailing image of African-American hip hop as 'real' hip hop" 1st page

This is a huge positive for american hip hop as they are represented for being 'real', and this really does challenge the negative stereotypes as the uses of them being real could apply to audiences that hip hop is poetry itself and trying to be real to the world to stand up for what they think is right.

Olympic Opening Ceremony Article Analysis

When analysing the Olympic Opening Ceremony I came across a article by the daily mail that upon re-evaluation was removed due to the racist comments being fired towards anyone non-white. I think that the theorist that would most likely be linked with this situation would be Fanon, reason being is that Fanon believed that the only way black people could be accepted is if they were to wear the white mask and this clearly is linked with the Olympic Opening Ceremony article as Rick Dewsbrey believed that "This was supposed to be a representation of modern life in England but it is likely to be a challenge for the organisers to find an educated white middle-aged mother and black father living together with a happy family in such a set-up."

This clearly connotes that the white mask was clearly worn as Dewsbrey believes that the opening ceremony challenged the organisers as its not likely for a white aged mother and a black father living together happy and implies the mask was being worn as the opening ceremony was trying to show something that doesn't really happen in Britain.

However, I fairly believe that Dewsbrey is being very harsh and in other aspects racist but then again I believe that he's right in a way, reason being is that not every household with a white mother and a black father leads to a disappointment, however a tiny percentage of mothers that are single are from a black father so its a mixed answer and depends on how a person would want to judge. In conlusion I think that this really does relate to the theorist Fanon as this clearly shows how black people have to wear the white mask to be accepted hence why they did that for the Olympic opening ceremony

Robin Thicke Blurred Lines Analysis WWW and EBI

WWW: you've addressed the key issue and tried to bring in the key theorist. however
EBI: you've confused the main theorists and your analysis is unclear. In places the answer is repetitive and you don't seem sure of the points you are making.
LR: go back to the theorists and consider how they would respond to the video.
When linked to theorists I will use Mcrobbie reason being is that she thinks that it is fine for women to be a bit explicit and flaunt therefore Blurred Lines may make her judge very different with her opinion as the video is filled with a lot of explicitly but also has a feature of a naked version also therefore this would most likely make her change her mind on how women should be a bit explicit and possibly changer her opinion on women being a bit explicit.

Research for Summer

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Bz09vIt4SMoncV81R2tETGNmeUE/edit?usp=sharing

Evaluation of my presentation

  • How your research contributed (or failed to contribute) to the presentation
  • The delivery of the presentation
  • The topic area chosen
  • How you plan to develop the presentation into an extended academic essay
I think my research contributed to my presentation fairly as i researched my topic very well as i had good points to share with my colleges but also gained enough information to relate back to my question and answer with good detail, however i failed to really put in a lot of media terminology and theory therefore this is what i would need to focus and improve on to make sure my grade increases and gain a very good understanding of media terminology and theory.

I think the delivery of the presentation was good as i was very confident and got my points across clearly which is very effective as this shows i have very good presentational skills and also the topic area chosen was focussed on as well and i had gained a lot of information to relate back to the topic area and get my point across to the audience and make them understand the question i'm trying to answer.

I will plan to develop the presentation into an extended academic essay by relating the question with high detailed media terminology and theory to make sure i can gain an understanding of the terms but also apply it to my answer and research to make me gain the highest grade possible.

Notes for J.Cole

Jermaine Lamarr Cole (born January 28, 1985), better known by his stage name J. Cole, is an American hip-hop recording artist and record producer from Fayetteville, North Carolina. In 2009, he became the first artist to sign to Jay-Z's Roc Nation label. His debut album Cole World: The Sideline Story was released on September 27, 2011. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard200Top R&B Albums and Top Rap Albums chart, selling more than 218,000 in its first week. He received a nomination for Best New Artist at the 54th Grammy Awards.

Cole was born in the 97th General Hospital at a United States Army base in Frankfurt, West Germany. His father is African-American and served in the United States Army, and his mother is white. At the age of 8 months, Cole relocated to Fayetteville,North Carolina, where he was raised by his mother, aunt and cousin. His father left the family when Cole was still young.
Cole started rapping at the age 12, becoming serious about it at the age of 15. He hooked up with a local group called Bomm Sheltuh, which included rappers Nervous Reck and FilthE Ritch. Around this time he added record production to his repertoire and his stage name was Therapist.
Cole grew up in a multi-ethnic environment. His childhood revolved around a love for both basketball and rap music. He attended Terry Sanford High School and decided to study guitar under the well-known artist Mark Ebert. Cole graduated from high school in 2003. He concluded that he had a better chance of getting a record deal in New York City, so he chose to attend St. John's University on an academic scholarship. There, he majored in communication and minored in business, graduating magna cum laude.
On his mixed-race background, Cole indicated in an October 2011 issue of the hip-hop magazine XXL:
I can identify with White people, because I know my mother, her side of the family, who I love. I've had White friends. I know people from high school that I might not have hung out with outside of high school, but I think I got to know them pretty well, so I know they sense of humor. But at the end of the day, I never felt White. I don't know what that feels like. I can identify. But never have I felt like I'm one of them. Not that I wanted to, or tried to, but it just was what it was. I identify more with what I look like, because that's how I got treated. Not necessarily in a negative way. But when you get pulled over by the police, I can't pull out my half-White card. Or if I just meet you on the street, you're not gonna be like, This guy seems half-White.

Brainstorm

5 Media Texts:
  • Films
  • Magazines
  • Social Networking
  • TV shows
  • Music

Main 3:

Social Networking sites:
  1. Social networking sites can be a cause of bullying mainly to the younger generation who are most likely to be using sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
  2. Sites such as Facebook and Twitter can be a huge distraction as people are most likely to want to spend more time online using social networking sites rather than getting their revision done.
  3. An advantage on social networking sites would be that it enables people to communicate with other people who may not be in the country. This is beneficial for most people as they are able to use social networking sites as a source of communications even to those who are abroad.
  4. A disadvantage would be there people may complain that there are not enough options for privacy. Peoples profiles can still be seen etc and some people may not want this. Therefore it creates problems and may put people off in wanting to create an account/profile.

Films:
  1. Films can be seen as entertaining - it takes up peoples time so if they wanted to kill time and keep up with the latest films, it comes across as entertainment for people and families.
  2. Piracy - People can illegally record films at cinemas and sell them in busy locations which is seen as a disadvantage to the film industry as people are most likely to buy pirate copies rather than pay the full price for a cinema ticket.
  3. Word of mouth - people can watch the film and if it is not up to customer standards, they're likely to spread the word that the film is not worth watching. Also, twitter bombing online causes people not to watch the film resulting in fewer views and lower income on tickets.
  4. Escapism - People are drawn into the film, takes them away from every day life.

Music:
  1. Music makes a huge impact of peoples lives especially those from the younger generation.
  2. Music videos become an inspiration to the younger generation as they're the ones most likely to be influences to do and act the same way as the artists they see in music videos.
  3. Some artists may be seen as inspirational which is seen through the artists lyrics as they may be lyrically talented and have a specific message that they are trying to portray.
  4. Entertainment
  5. Puts people in specific moods, emotional, happy, dance etc.
